Fall in exports to EU, China whittle down Malaysian trade surplus

Malaysia’s trade surplus slumped to 3.6 billion ringgit (US$1.16 billion) in July, its lowest in more than a decade, as the Southeast Asian nation’s exports to the European Union and China fell sharply amid a global slowdown.

The surplus fell well short of a median forecast for a 9.1 billion ringgit surplus given by a Reuters poll of 17 analysts, and was the lowest since April 2002.

Exports fell 1.9 per cent from a year ago, confounding expectations for a 3.8 percent rise, while imports rose 9.5 per cent, compared with a 5.1 per cent forecast.
