Senate moves to bar US airlines from EU emissions-trading programme

The US Senate has passed a measure that will effectively shield the country's airlines from a European Union programme designed to curtail aviation emissions.

The bill, supported by the airlines, was approved on Saturday, before lawmakers adjourned to campaign for the November 6 election.

Under the measure, which must be reconciled with similar legislation passed by the House last year, US carriers would be barred from participating in the EU emissions-trading system for carbon credits.
