Australia trade deficit widened by weather in Jan
Australia’s trade deficit widened by more than expected in January as bad weather hit resource exports, though a rebound in imports of capital goods and cars pointed to resilience in domestic demand.
Thursday’s figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the deficit widened to A$1.06 billion (HK$8.44 billion) in January, from A$688 million (HK$5.48 billion) the month before.
Shipments of iron ore and coal both fell back after a very strong December, though higher prices would have eased the pain for miners.
