US debt default firewall still a work in progress as Thursday deadline looms

The Treasury Market Practices Group, the government-debt markets watchdog that is sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, outlined steps last year that would include manually changing the maturity dates of securities that are processed through the central bank's Fedwire, its electronic service that transfers securities and payments.
